Identifying Our Approaches to Language Learning Technologies: Improving Professional Development
A very interesting article about using technology in the classroom,
commonly referred to as Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
To help us analyze the article we have some questions as a guide to
write our reactions to the reading.
1- Are you a determinist, an instrumental or a critical user? What makes you classify yourself in a certain category? Explain
I agree with the instrumental position. For me technology is a tool,
a very powerful tool, but it depends on the way we use it, so if the
teacher masters the technology, he will obtain the best results
from his students. The abilities of the teacher are the base for
the effective language learning. Technology is a part of the
learning process, we have to find the way to get the best from
technology and the best from our students in every lesson.
2- What is the utility of this framework for a language teacher? Analyse from different perspectives
The utility of this framework for laguage teachers is to use
technology in the language learning classroom in the most
productive and rational way possible.
The idea is that teachers can achieve different goals such us:
developing comfort with language learning technologies
to design instruction according to sound SLA principles
to critically consider the sociocultural impacts of
technology integration.
3- Appply Warschauer’s model to professional development to yourself (take the test) and leave your comments. Do you agree on the resuts? Why or why not?
According to the test I'm definitely part of the instrumental
position. I agree with the results, and I think that the reason
is what I expressed before, the teacher can obtain the best
benefits of technology if he has the ability to use it. So, we
need to be well prepared to transmit the knowledge to our
students in an attractive way. And of course, it is necessary
to have the resources and good technology, but for me, the
most important resources are those who are part of the
creativity of the teacher.
4- What goals do you set to yourself in the future in terms of technology in the EFL classroom?
We all know that technology goes very fast. Every day there
are new ideas and applications in order to simplify our lives.
I would apply technology in the EFL class in order to be
connect with native speakers, I would dedicate an entire
subject for speaking with English native speakers. As a
practice it would be very useful. I would like to create an
integrated system of subjects with English-speaking
Universities, that would be a big advance for the learning
process of EFL. I'm sure that we will have this system in
a near future.
